Uchenna Dance was formed in January 2009 under the vision and leadership of Creative Director and Choreographer, Vicki Igbokwe, shortly after she experienced a life-changing trip to New York during the summer of 2008.
Feeling like fish out of water throughout her stay in New York, but falling in love with the underground dance scene and the styles of House, Waacking and Vogue, Vicki was in awe of the Drag Queens and everything that world had to offer. Taking from that experience a newfound confidence and discovery of dance styles now engrained within Uchenna Dance’s vocabulary; Vicki returned to London inspired and confident about her choreographic path. To date, Vicki’s mission is to help others rediscover who they are and be the best possible version of themselves that they can be.
Still in love with the New York underground dance scene Vicki has made several trips back to train and further learn about its culture and history.
Uchenna Dance’s vision is to become a leading, diverse, forward thinking creative force that transcends the African, Contemporary and Urban Dance worlds; creating a diverse group of beneficiaries and stakeholders, not limited to the dance world, that will engage with the company and all it has to offer.
Uchenna Dance’s mission is to provide high quality dance experiences for beneficiaries at different stages of their dance practice, whether they are a participant, spectator or project partner.
